New Seven Wonders of the World.
The list of the 7 Wonders of the World was compiled in the ancient times in Greece. It included the most outstanding works of Greek, Babylonian and Egyptian architecture. New Seven Wonders of the World mostly include ancient constructions, with one exception of Christ the Redeemer statue. Many of these constructions were not known to 7 Wonders of the World list authors.
On July 7 of 2007 the list of New Seven Wonders of the World made known to public. The new wonders of the world were selected by people from all over the world through the online or phone voting. This poll was acknowledged to be the largest of all.
Today New Seven Wonders of the World list includes the following constructions:
- Chichen Itza
- Christ the Redeemer
- Colosseum
- Great Wall of China
- Machu Picchu
- Petra
- Taj Mahal
Christ the Redeemer statue is the only modern creation, named among the wonders of the world. The rest of them date back to B.C. era. Some of these constructions are the largest in the world, such as the Great Wall of China or the Christ the Redeemer statue. Others represent ancient civilizations and still hold their secrets hidden from us, such as mysterious cities of Maya and Inca. Many of these new wonders of the world have become the icons of their countries or cities, but all of them attract millions of tourists. And all of them amaze people with the scale or the art of their creation.
Most of these wonders were enlisted by UNESCO into the register of world’s historical heritage. The geography of the new 7 wonders of the world range from India to South America. Most of these places, with the exception of Petra, located in the heart of the Middle East, were unknown to Greek authors of the first list of wonders.
Chichen Itza

The ancient Maya city of Chichen Itza is the first one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This list of new wonders was compiled on July 7th of 2007. The city ruins are located on the Yucatan Peninsula. The name Chichen Itza means “the place near Itza tribe well”. The city was built by Maya before Columbus discovered America. The city was located in the northern part of Yucatan. Today, the territory belongs to Mexico. Chichen Itza is one of the largest cities, built by Maya and known to us. The time of foundation of this city dates back to 5th century A.D. Presently archeologists have discovered 16 large buildings. The territory of the city covers 2,3 square miles. Chichen Itza was a temple city. And, its position on Yucatan was not accidental. Maya located their cities so, that they would reflect the location of stars and planets they observed on the sky at night.
Christ the Redeemer

Unlike the Colossus of Rhodes, which lasted only for 60 years, the statue of Christ the Redeemer stands for 80 years and most likely will last much longer. Christ the Redeemer is listed among the largest monuments in the world. In fact, it is the second largest Art Deco style statue in the world. There is nothing to be surprised of that in 2007 it was called one of new 7 wonders of the world. Its location place is Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. It stands on the tallest mountain of this bay, called Corcovado. 2 300 feet is the height of Corcovado mount and this territory belongs to Tijuca Forest National Park. The statue itself is 124 ft tall. The span of the statue’s wide spread arms is almost 100 ft. Christ the Redeemer statue is made of soapstone and reinforced concrete. Its construction was begun in 1922 and it took them 9 years to finish it. The opening of the statue was in 1931. The overall costs of construction reached 250 000 US dollars. The weight of Christ the Redeemer statue is 635 tons.
Colosseum

Colosseum is the third wonder on the new 7 wonders of the world list. It is situated in the eternal city – Rome, Italy. As most of the other new 7 wonders of the world, such as Christ the Redeemer statue or Taj Mahal, it has become the icon of its city and its country. Colosseum ruins probably are the most tremendous ruins in the world. This arena was built back in 1st century B.C. by Roman emperor Vespasian. Romans took great pride in it and declared it to be the largest amphitheatre in the ancient world. The first ancient name of Colosseum is Amphitheatrum Flavium, because it was built during the reign of Flavium family emperors. Three of them got the chance to rule, while the Colosseum was built.

Even in our western countries Great Wall of China has become a byword. It is one of the new 7 wonders of the world and it is one of the few manmade objects, visible from the space. The purpose of building the Great Wall of China was to guard the Chinese Empire against multiple nomad tribes. They used to make raids over the chinese land and ruin it. Great Wall of China consists of many fragments of the wall built in different ages by different emperors.
Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is the ancient Inca city, located high up in the mountains. The discovery of this city produced more mysteries and questions, than it has given answers. In 2007 Machu Picchu was included into a list of new 7 wonders of the world. The old stone city Machu Picchu is set on a high mountain almost 8 000 feet above the sea. The mountain looms high over the Urubamba Valley in Peru.
Petra

Petra means the rock. No other word could describe this city better and more precisely. Petra is the city in the rock or carved out of the rock. They did not build it in the traditional sense. They carved it right in the cliff, with all its magnificent temples, halls and apartments. New 7 Wonders of the World could not exclude this amazing lost and found city of Jordan. Petra is located in the ancient land, full of legends and history woven around it. Its geography is described in the Bible and is tightly related to biblical events. The city was located on the crossroads of ancient trade routes. One of them was known as the Spice way. The city prospered and accumulated riches. This was one of the reasons its citizens made it so well hidden and protected.
Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal history is the story of great love. Taj Mahal is a mausoleum, and like the first such construction, which was named after the king Mausolus and entered the list of 7 Wonders of the World, it was dedicated to the sacred memory of the beloved. Taj Mahal is the last one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Taj Mahal was constructed in 1631.The name Taj Mahal means the Crown of Buildings. It has to be said, it well deserves such a name. Shan Jahan, the young king of Mughal, fell in love with his 19 years old wife Mumtaz Mahal. His love was so strong, that he even refused to live with his large harem of wives. All his affection was bestowed on Mumtaz Mahal. She has given birth to 14 children and then she passed away. Shan Jahan was in deep sorrow. He had even announced a two year mourning across the entire nation and decided to build the grand mausoleum to honor his wife.
